About

While the UK economy rolls away from the recent recession, household debt continues to weigh down many households. Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is passionate about releasing people in our nation from a life sentence of debt, poverty and its causes. Working with the local church CAP brings good news, hope and freedom.
The Lancaster, Morecambe and District Churches Debt Centre is funded by several local churches, working alongside the national charity, Christians Against Poverty.

It not only offers a listening ear and advice, but practical help for those who need to get back on top of their finances - even winning praise from TV's money-saving expert, Martin Lewis, who said: “CAP are unsurpassed when it comes to the debt help they give people across the country.

"The biggest message I get back from those I have sent to CAP is ‘I finally slept last night'".

Centre manager Jono Peatman told The Bay: “Typically, debts can build up when a relationship breaks down, someone loses their job, or through bereavement.

"These are times when people are least able to cope with a financial headache. That’s why we’re so excited to have a debt centre here in the Lancaster and Morecambe area.

“We hope over the next few years to help countless local people and families, regardless of their age, gender, faith or background, to put their debt nightmares behind them and start a new life.”

Reverend Steven Hewitt, pastor of Stanley Road Baptist Church, Morecambe, is chair of Trustees of LMDCDC.

He said: “Churches are called to be light in the world – to make a difference. Therefore, we are really pleased that churches have committed their resources to make the debt centre a reality.

“At a time of severe pressure on people’s incomes, we are confident that this project will see lives changed for the better.”

Every client is visited in their own home, while Christians Against Poverty (CAP) do all the negotiating with creditors to reduce the outstanding debts.

CAP gives advice on a suitable budget so that clients meet their debts while local volunteers offer them ongoing support.
